RESPONSIBILITIES
Community Organizing
- Build and maintain a base of engaged tenant leaders, who are representative of the people most impacted by housing injustice in Baltimore and who can lead BRU tenant campaigns.
- Add 250 new BRU contacts a year, including 20 new core leaders.
- Convene bi-weekly city-wide tenant meetings with tenant leaders to engage in political
- education trainings, support tenant organizing in individual buildings, and develop
- Citywide policy priorities
- Lead regular outreach activities (at rent court and in other buildings) with support from
- BRU partners, including regular follow-up
- Maintain data systems for tracking leaders in the BRU data management system
- Maintain connections with state, regional and national campaigns for tenants rights and
- housing justice with groups in alignment with BRU’s principles
Organizational Support
- Provide staff support to the BRU Steering Committee and liaise between the Steering Committee, Organizing Space, and Policy Committee
- Represent BRU at community events, in the media, and with other organizations as needed
- Attend internal meetings as needed and participate in all-hands-on-deck actions and significant organizational events
- Support BRUs communication needs including promotion, social media, and press releases
- Support the Fundraising Committee with development and fundraising coordination
Qualifications
- Belief in BRU’s mission, vision, and values
- Demonstrated commitment and passion for housing justice, tenant power, and racial and
- economic justice
- At least two years of experience with grassroots community organizing, and particularly
- with low-income and Black communities
- Experience with grassroots/local campaign development
- Interest in coordinating a political education program around housing as a human right,
- decommodification of housing and land, etc.
- Highly organized and self-starting, ability to juggle multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and
- maintain strong, clear and direct communication with others
- Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with people of diverse
- backgrounds, and to build and maintain relationships with partners
- Demonstrated ability and comfort with public speaking
- Availability to work flexible hours including some nights and weekends
- Basic literacy with Google docs, Microsoft Office, video conferencing, and data
- management systems.
- Spanish language skills preferred
- Communications skills involving drafting press releases, use of social media (twitter,
- instagram) and press events preferred
This is a full time position for a one year contract, beginning in May 2022. Salary is 55,000/yr plus benefits. Baltimore Renters United is committed to supporting the professional development of staff and will provide training opportunities whenever possible.
