Description

The Enoch Pratt Free Library is looking for a dynamic individual interested in supporting the mission of the Children's Services department. If you are that person, please apply to join our team!

Under the direction of the Manager of Children's Services, the Elementary Programming Specialist will assist with the coordination and implementation of library programs and services for children ages 6-11 and their families.

The Specialist will be required to stay current on trends in youth literature, programming, and popular culture. In addition, they will advise on programming and services for elementary-aged children, support major and branch-level children's programs at the Central Library and neighborhood branches, and participate in the development and facilitation of staff training.

Summary of Duties

The summary of duties listed below is not exhaustive. Additional duties are dependent upon the needs of the hiring department.

The Library Program Specialist, Elementary will:


  • Implements goals and objectives for children’s services and programs, which support the library’s mission and strategic plan.

  • Coordinates and facilitates Operation Warm and Family Reading Circle.

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of system-wide children’s programs and projects such as Summer Break Baltimore, the Read to Reef Book Club, Ticket to Discovery, and the library’s participation in the Maryland STEM Festival.

  • Stays current on trends in elementary library services, literature, and popular culture, and explores innovative programming for this age group. 

  • Advises on relevant Children’s Services Standards for age-level specialists. 

  • As a member of the virtual programming team, hosts and produces system-wide hybrid and virtual children’s programs.

  • Contributes to the orientation of new children’s librarians and facilitates training and professional development sessions for staff.

  • Gathers and analyzes data on children’s programming and evaluates current program offerings to encourage strong participation and impact.

  • Creates and maintains professional relationships with city and community agencies. Identifies opportunities for collaboration on programs and services.

  • Participates in citywide coalitions focused on issues and initiatives for elementary-aged children and their families. 

  • Collaborates with other divisions and departments including Collection Management, Institutional Advancement, Marketing, and Systems to further the library’s mission and children’s services.

  • Participates in workgroups related to the design and renovation of children’s and youth spaces.

  • Schedules and assists with programs and outreach activities, as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years’ experience in children’s or youth services in an urban or public library or school setting. Demonstrated knowledge of children’s literature and programming trends for ages 6-11. Relevant experience in coordinating and implementing public programs. Demonstrated experience in creating and maintaining partner relationships.


Desired Qualifications


MLS or MLIS from a college or university accredited by ALA, or a Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with relevant focus.  

Experience with technology and software that supports virtual and hybrid programming, including Zoom, Streamyard, Mevo, Restream, and Google Meets.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Belief in and understanding of the importance of providing library services to children and their families in an urban setting.

  • Knowledge of library organizations, goals and services.

  • Proven experience in project management, especially in a library setting.

  • Strong knowledge of childhood development and experience in developing and implementing children’s programs for ages 6-11 to include literacy-based programs, STEM programs, author visits, and more. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of children's and youth literature and trends. Ability to evaluate and recommend books in relation to various needs, interests, and reading levels.

  • Experience in establishing collaborative relationships with a variety of municipal and non-profit agencies and organizations, especially those serving the needs of children and caregivers. 

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a willingness to work collaboratively and the ability to create and present information in group settings.

  • Ability to resolve problems and conflict with diplomacy and discretion.
