The Coordinator for Community Engagement is responsible for the implementation of community engagement programs and initiatives on campus and beyond, including training student leaders and developing and maintaining relationships with TU departments, local nonprofit organizations, and community leaders. The Coordinator for Community Engagement works closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Civic Engagement to develop short-term and long-term applied learning opportunities connected to the following thematic areas: environmental health and well-being, nutrition security, gender equality, immigrant rights, and racial equity. The Coordinator for Community Engagement supervises two graduate assistants and reports to the Assistant Director for Civic Engagement.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Coordinate community engagement programs and initiatives connected to environmental health and well-being, nutrition security, gender equality, immigrant rights, and racial equity on campus and beyond. Recruit, train, and mentor student leaders to support these programs and initiatives. Work with the Director and Assistant Director to develop short-term and long-term applied learning opportunities connected to the thematic areas listed above. Work with campus partners to support applied learning opportunities in their areas. Campus partners include, but are not limited to, BTU, the Career Center, Housing and Residence Life, International Initiatives Office, New Student and Family Programs, Student Activities, Student Conduct and Civility Education, Student Success Programs, and Sustainability.
- Connect students and student organizations who are seeking community engagement opportunities to local nonprofit organizations. Develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with local nonprofit organizations and community leaders whose work aligns with the five core areas.
- Supervise two Graduate Assistants and undergraduate Community Engagement Leaders. Support the Director in assessment efforts, including collecting program evaluation and completing annual surveys (e.g., President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, Campus Compact Annual Survey). Serve on divisional and university committees, task forces, workgroups, standing committees, and, if applicable, advise student organizations. Participate fully in major University programming and programming sponsored by Student Affairs including, but not limited to, New Student Orientation, Family Weekend, and Commencement. Assist with other duties within the Division of Student Affairs as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree
- Two years of experience with program planning and implementation or experience working with non-profit organizations
- Experience with civic engagement and community engagement programs and initiatives
- Experience working with diverse student populations
- Committed to continuous learning, development, and research on current trends and best practices
- Ability to work with a wide range of students, staff, and faculty in a diverse college setting
- Strong communication skills
- Understanding of and passion for social issues
- Knowledge of best practices for community engagement
- Understanding of best practices for university-community partnerships
- Demonstrated experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously and with limited supervision
- Driver's license with no more than 5 points
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Global Studies, History, Modern Languages, Political Sciences, Sociology, or a closely related field.
- Master's degree
- Proficiency in Spanish or other languages, in addition to English.
- Experience in training student leaders and program facilitation.
