Full Job Description

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Established in 2001, PeacePlayers is a peacebuilding nonprofit organization that uses sport as a vehicle to unite, educate and inspire young people living in divided communities. Based on the premise that
“children who play together can learn to live together,” PeacePlayers has become a worldwide leader in the use of sport to build a more peaceful world, reaching more than 75,000 youth in 15 countries.

By offering equitable basketball programming, peace education, leadership development, and professional training, PeacePlayers challenges the status quo of hatred and fear that grips societies in conflict – making cross-community cooperation desirable and giving young people practical skills to deal with conflict and grow into advocates for peace in their communities. The organization operates year-round programs in the
Middle East, South Africa, Northern Ireland, and Cyprus, internationally. Domestically programming is in five major US cities Baltimore, Brooklyn, Detroit, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

Baltimore has a long history of redlining which is still felt in communities of color in the city of Baltimore today. Studies show that Baltimore has the lowest rate of mobility out of poverty in the country, a statistic tied directly to education as much as it is economic opportunity. Neighborhoods that are less than 50 percent African American receive nearly four times the investment of neighborhoods that are over
85 percent African American. Low-poverty neighborhoods receive one and a half times the investment of high-poverty neighborhoods.

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION

PeacePlayers believes that basketball has the power to be a catalyst for change. We achieve this by using the game of basketball to bridge divides, create equitable opportunities, and develop youth leaders.

The Program Coordinator will support PeacePlayers efforts to run sports-based community programming in Baltimore, MD. PeacePlayers Baltimore currently operates at Northwood Elementary School, Steuart Hill Academic Academy, Sandtown-Winchester Achievement Academy, The Academy for College and Career Exploration, Oliver Community Center (Dawson Safe Haven), and St. Francis Neighborhood Center, offering year-round basketball programming for youth ages 8-18. The Program Coordinator will report to the Director of PeacePlayers Baltimore and will be responsible for leading and supporting Baltimore programming (most specifically PeacePlayers Baltimore LDP), supporting local funding efforts, and supervising additional coaching staff.

Our programming consists of:

Summer Camp

PeacePlayers offers an 8-week basketball summer camp for youth ages 10-18. Summer programming is a combination of basketball skills development and experiential learning activities. Summer camp serves as an added enrichment program for youth that allows them to experience the best of our basketball and leadership programming

Peace League

Peace League is an after-school leadership through sports program serving youth ages 8-13. Peace League creates a safe space for youth to have fun and build friendships with peers across community divides, as well as opportunities to access positive, caring role models in their coaches. Peace League is offered in the Fall (September through December) and Spring (February through June). Sessions, which take place
1-2 times a week, include a combination of leadership workshops and basketball drills. Cities also host
Twinning events that bring together youth in the Peace League program.

Leadership Development (LDP)

The Leadership Development Program (LDP) is a community-based program that serves youth ages
14-18 with the goal of equipping them to be leaders in their communities. LDP participants walk through a more in-depth PeacePlayers’ peace education curriculum. The four pillars of the LDP are basketball skill development, personal development, experiential learning, and community service. LDP provides opportunities to mentor younger participants, and access caring adult role models, and resources to support their personal development and academic goals.
