The UMBC Career Center, within the Division of Student Affairs, aims to empower all students and graduates to create their own success stories. We work with students at every academic level, from first-year freshmen to graduate students. Responsibilities:

The UMBC Career Center is seeking a part-time Career Specialist/General Associate to provide career counseling, job-search and interview preparation, and graduate/professional school assistance to students and alumni.

Additional duties include:

  • Develop and present workshops on a multitude of career development topics and skills
  • Administer and interpret career and education decision making assessments including the MBTI and Focus 2
  • Support team members with UMBC’s Building Skills for Career Success practicum course for student employment
  • Maintain the major resources area on the Career Center’s website
  • Support marketing, promotion, and usage of our interview training module (Big Interview)
  • Manage and oversee career blogs and family newsletter submissions

This is a 6-month contract working roughly 20 hours per week (no benefits), which may be renewable.  Flexible Schedule - Up to 20 hours per week with flexibility on which days (M-F) working based on candidate's availability.

Requires occasional evening and week-end hours for student/alumni appointments and events. 

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in counseling, psychology, student personnel, human resources or related field

  • At least one year of experience providing career counseling, advising, or coaching, including graduate school preparation

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to present and/or facilitate informative and engaging career programs

Preferred Qualifications: 
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds

  • Proven ability to coordinate and facilitate virtual counseling appointments and career seminars

  • Knowledge of social media, especially LinkedIn, as well as job market trends. 

  • Prior experience working in higher education 

  • Knowledge of a strength-based approach to career advising 

  • Knowledge of career assessments, including MBTI certified

  • Basic computer skills including knowledge of online recruiting platforms such as Handshake, as well as video conference platforms (such as Webex)

Salary:Hourly salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. 
Hours:Part-time (19.5 hours per week). Flexible Schedule- Up to 20 hours per week with flexibility on which days (M-F) working based on candidate's availability.

Additional Information:This is a temporary position.  Initial contract is for 6 with the possibility of renewal.
