THE POSITION

Regular Schedule: 39 hours per week

A Non-Merit vacancy exists in Vehicle Operations and Maintenance, Office of Budget and Finance. 

Non-Merit vacancies are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under general supervision, performs a full range of skilled diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on automobiles, light trucks, and related equipment. 

  • Performs universal all-purpose automotive preventive maintenance and services, such as engine oil and filter changes, chassis lubrications, engine tune-ups, and the replacement of tires, batteries, belts, hoses, and lights.
  • Diagnoses automotive malfunctions. Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and replaces various automotive components and systems such as performing complete brake jobs, ignitions, exhaust systems, and suspensions. Repairs and replaces starters, alternators, generators, and other electronic automotive components.  Likewise some installations might include the removal of engines and transmissions in association to other electrical components.
  • Repairs automotive air conditioning, heating, and cooling systems. Performs front end alignments, installation of steering boxes and related elements.
  • Prepares new vehicles for police service by installing specialized equipment such as cages, overhead lights, alarm systems, gun racks, and identification decals.

Examples of Other Duties
Operates equipment to tow disabled vehicles to the shop. Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Qualifications
At least three years' automotive repair and maintenance experience.

Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial class C, Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment. Some positions may require possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a commercial, class B Maryland driver's license and a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.  (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.) 

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions.  Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.

Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails the performance of heavy physical labor including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation
Applicants selected for an appointment to a position in Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination and drug screen and an employment background investigation, including, but not limited to a criminal background, education, and fingerprint check.
